Real Madrid left French left-back Ferland Mendy out of the 25-player squad list submitted to UEFA for this season’s Champions League campaign. The decision was made by head coach José Mourinho, meaning Mendy will not be eligible to feature in the competition for Los Blancos this term.
Why was Mendy excluded from the squad?
The exact footballing reasons behind Mourinho’s choice have not been detailed publicly, but the omission reflects a broader selection decision within the club’s defensive options ahead of the European campaign. Real Madrid, like all clubs competing in UEFA competitions, must submit a list of 25 registered players eligible to play in the Champions League, forcing tough calls on fringe or rotation squad members.
Mendy will not be part of Real Madrid’s Champions League plans this season, according to the squad list handed to UEFA.
What does this mean for Mendy’s role at Real Madrid?
Being left off the UEFA list does not prevent Mendy from playing in domestic competitions such as La Liga or the Copa del Rey, but it significantly limits his involvement in the club’s European fixtures. The decision raises questions about his standing in the squad hierarchy and could influence discussions about his long-term future at the Santiago Bernabéu, particularly if he is unable to force his way back into continental selection later in the season through squad list amendments allowed under UEFA regulations.
Context of Real Madrid’s Champions League squad
Real Madrid’s submission of the 25-man list is a standard administrative requirement for all clubs entering the Champions League group stage. The exclusion of a first-team defender like Mendy is notable given his previous contributions to the club’s European successes, and it will likely fuel speculation about squad depth and selection strategy under Mourinho as the team prepares for its continental fixtures.
